Since I start my new job at Truth hurts Brew Co's beer shop, beer thirty, I've been working on some designs for their beer labels. The beers they do are mostly named after bleak truisms of life. Those already familiar with my work will know that this topic is right up my street.
The first one is ready. It's called "happiness is temporary".
Contrary to how it might seem, it was a fun concept to work on. I thought of a few ways in which happiness could come to an end, like how a snowman might feel when the sun comes out, how it feels to have your ice cream fall from it's cone, that feeling when you let go of your helium-filled ballon-o-joy and there's a happy bloke captured at the precise moment he just realised his head & face are disintegrating into nothingness, y'know, standard moments in life we can all relate to.
It is possibly the most nihilistic beer label title on the range at the moment, but I wanted the final design to feel like it had it's tongue firmly in it's cheek, so I deliberately chose the ways in which happiness is temporary that aren't exactly philosophically hard hitting/not even realistic. I feel like my comicy, cartoon-like style lends itself to the jokey vibe I was going for. Did I succeed? Well, the first comment when I posted it to instagram was along the lines of "fxxking hell man that is bleak!" but then followed by a lot of typed laughter, so... I don't know, maybe it's worked?
